What is Executive Function?
EXECUTIVE FUNCTION–the part of the brain that-functions to execute-makes it possible TO DO WHAT WE INTEND TO DO. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental difference that creates inconsistency with performance—EXECUTIVE FUNCTION PERFORMANCE!
We need to know what executive functions are so that we can better understand why we function the way we do so we know what support we might need to get things done. There are many different ways to distinguish between them, but I have chosen the Eleven Executive Functions:
Activation/Initiation
Attention & Focus
Working Memory
Organization
Planning & Prioritization
Time-keeping
Processing Speed
Impulse Control
Self-Monitoring/Metacognition
Flexible Thinking
Emotion Control
Untangling ADHD symptoms from a person’s core identity helps us to identify our unique strengths and challenges so we can begin to find what supports we most need.
This. Is. Hard.
YES, and … it’s worth it!
Doing the work to learn about the brain and executive function performance will help you better understand the social and emotional impact that ADHD and executive function challenges have on learning, motivation, behavior— just living our lives!
Each month I will highlight one of the Eleven Executive Functions and include some of my best tricks, tips, tools, and strategies to improve EF Performance.
